Introducing Carlton North Chiropractor Dr. Stephen

“I admit, I was a sceptic and a little scared at first,” remembers Dr. Stephen Sassinis Shashyan at age 14.  But my parents insisted that I try chiropractic since I was experiencing almost daily back pain after my high school football injury. I was reluctant to see a chiropractor as the family G.P. and physio’s hadn’t helped the problem and chiropractic looked and sounded scary. To humour my parents I went to see Dr. Graham Keeney, my Father’s chiropractor.”

“It was incredible,” continues Dr. Stephen. “I’ll never forget that first adjustment. It was as if a huge weight was suddenly lifted off my back. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a chiropractor.”

Dr. Stephen began his pre-chiropractic education at Adelaide University where he studied a degree in the basic sciences and finished with a triple major in anatomy & histology, micro-immuno-virology and physiology. After completing his study there, he was accepted at the RMIT University College of Chiropractic in Melbourne where he was dubbed “Steveology” by his peers because of his strong scientific background.

During his four years at RMIT, courses included biochemistry, a major emphasis on anatomy and human physiology, X-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care in the student College Public Clinic. In 1999 Dr. Stephen went back to Adelaide to do his student placement followed by working with a number of other clinics locally and then interstate observing many of Australia’s leading practitioners.

After graduating in 2000 Dr. Stephen returned to the Melbourne and worked in the West learning and further developing his applied kinesiology skills. In 2001 he became a certified Applied Kinesiologist and started working at “North Road Chiropractic” while he also established his own practice “Carlton North Family Chiropractic.”

“We love sceptics,” smiles Dr. Stephen. “I still remember the concerns and apprehension I had when I went to the chiropractor for the first time. So we make it a point to explain everything in advance, answer questions and attempt to over communicate. Patients appreciate that.”

" Dr. Stephen is married to Tess who has recently had their first child Sascha Kate, 8 pounds

Dr. Stephen Asks some important questions of interest to Carlton North residents - Chiropractor Carlton North Dr. Stephen Asks...

What's the difference between maintenance, prevention and wellness?
Maintenance chiropractic care is an attempt to keep a dynamic, ever-changing and adapting organism (you) in a static relationship with your environment. Preventive chiropractic care is mostly about early detection. Wellness chiropractic care is an attempt to optimise our health and be all that you were designed to be.
How does headache medication find the headache?
It can't! Chiropractors know that when you ingest a drug and it enters your bloodstream it numbs or deadens your entire body. Chiropractic adjustments, on the other hand, are specific, targeted and delivered with precision.
